Said to be the oldest temple in Tokyo. Tradition holds that it began in 628 (the 36th year of Empress Suiko's reign), when brothers fishing on the Miyato River pulled up a statue of Kannon. The approach runs from Kaminarimon Gate through the Nakamise shopping street and past Hōzōmon Gate to the main hall, and a five-story pagoda stands in the grounds. It is right outside Asakusa Station, which makes it an easy starting point for a walk around this area.
