Nihonbashi Walking Guide — Four Long-Established Shops in Half a Day

Around Nihonbashi Station there are four walking spots, ranging from a long-established Edo-style sushi counter and a soba shop to a handmade washi paper store and a Japanese tea salon. All four sit in Nihonbashi 2- and 3-chome in Chuo-ku, and every one is an old house: the tea merchant Yamamotoyama founded in 1690, the paper shop Haibara founded in 1806, Yoshino Sushi Honten with over 140 years since its street-stall beginnings, and Yabukyu, which has kept its shop curtain for more than 120 years. Signature prices are clearly posted — 3,300 yen for nigiri sushi, 1,815 yen for black-pork curry dipping seiro, 2,310 yen for a goshuin book, 5,500 yen for afternoon tea — so the day is easy to budget.

A suggested order for half a day

Yoshino Sushi Honten

An Edo-style sushi institution behind Nihonbashi Takashimaya, with more than 140 years of history since it began as a street stall. Techniques like vinegar-curing and simmering are handed down here as ways of drawing out the ingredient itself, and the rice is seasoned with red vinegar and salt only. Nigiri sushi is 3,300 yen, and from the counter you can watch the chef's handwork up close. It closes once the fish runs out, so build the walk around this stop.

Haibara

A washi paper shop founded in 1806, now housed in Tokyo Nihonbashi Tower. It deals in smooth, lustrous hand-made ganpi paper, alongside small goods made from chiyogami patterns designed in the Meiji and Taisho eras. A goshuin stamp book is 2,310 yen and a Haibara notebook 1,760 yen — easy things to carry home. Its signature pattern, "Iro-garasu" (colored glass), is also used in the shop's exterior design, so look up before you step inside.

Yamamotoyama Fujie Sabo

The flagship store opened in 2018 by Yamamotoyama, a tea merchant founded in 1690. Gyokuro is brewed by carefully lowering the water temperature, and you taste both the tea and its sweetness at a counter where every movement of the preparation is visible. Afternoon tea with two teas and ten sweets is 5,500 yen. The attached shop also sells tea and nori, which makes it the easiest place here to pick up a gift. The tea room runs from 11:00 with last orders at 17:00.

Nihonbashi Yabukyu

A soba restaurant that has kept its curtain in Nihonbashi for over 120 years. Its soto-ni noodles — ten parts buckwheat to two parts wheat flour — are kneaded using the foot-treading method. The house specialty is curry nanban, and the black-pork curry dipping seiro at 1,815 yen is also popular. There is a full soba course as well, and the third floor has sunken kotatsu seating where you can stretch out tired legs.

Only two spots have timing constraints: Yoshino Sushi Honten, which closes when the fish runs out, and the tea room at Yamamotoyama Fujie Sabo, open from 11:00 with last orders at 17:00. Pin those two down first and the rest of Nihonbashi 2- and 3-chome falls comfortably into a half-day walk.
