Zushi Walking Guide — Beach, Marina, Used Books and Small-Batch Coffee

Around Zushi Station there are 12 walking spots, ranging from the beach and the marina to cafés, a used bookshop and a florist. Starting from the restaurants near the station, passing along the Tagoe River and heading out to Zushi Beach and Zushi Marina gives you a route where the town and the sea run together in classic Shonan fashion. Prices are unusually easy to gauge here too: beef udon with tofu at ¥1,120, coffee from ¥650, and a sunset cruise at ¥6,600.

肉うどん×酒肴 ざくろ -zakuro-

A beef udon and sake-snack shop near Zushi Station. The signature bowl uses a sweet Kansai-style dashi, and the menu also draws on fish from Sajima fishing port and Kamakura vegetables. Beef udon with tofu is ¥1,120 and the salad of fresh yuba and Kujo scallions is ¥970. It works as a first meal or a last drink.

OHANAYA

A family-run eatery in Zushi 6-chome that cooks with ingredients from the sea and mountains of the Miura Peninsula. Dishes are built to be paired with wine. Because the sourcing stays local, it is a good place to taste what this stretch of coast actually produces.

Furuhon Isado & Torado

A used bookshop that occupies an entire house, open since 2012. There are no genre divisions; instead the books connect to one another as you follow the shelves. It rewards browsing rather than hunting for a specific title.

Tachibana

A neighborhood florist on the first floor of the Suzukiya Building at Zushi 5-3-28. Its distinctive flower arrangements have a following, and it also takes commissions for solo exhibitions. It sits in the same Zushi 5-chome block as Furuhon Isado & Torado, so the two are easy to combine.

andsaturday coffee & cakes

A Zushi shop for house-roasted coffee and cakes, using beans roasted on a machine from the long-established German maker PROBAT. Coffee starts at ¥650, and the seasonal fruit tart is priced by market rate. There is also a coffee ticket at ¥4,500 for eight cups with no expiry date.

POOLSIDE COFFEE

A coffee stand along the Tagoe River. Together with the adjoining POOLSIDE DINER, it is a place to sit and watch the water. It suits a pause on the way to the sea, and the riverside setting is the point as much as the drink.

浪子不動園地

A small park at the northern end of Zushi Beach, at the foot of Mount Hiroyama. The neighboring temple Koyoji is known as Namiko-fudo after Namiko, the heroine of the novel Hototogisu, which is set in this area. A monument to the novel stands on the rocky shore, making this a quiet threshold before the beach opens up.

逗子海岸

In the 1950s this was the beach where the "sun tribe" youth depicted in Shintaro Ishihara's Season of the Sun gathered. Hayama Marina opened in the 1960s and sailing out by yacht spread as a pastime. It is still busy with people doing SUP and windsurfing, and Ishihara's former residence stands near Hiroyama Park overlooking the shore.

OCEANS

A SUP school on Zushi Beach. The instruction is careful and enjoyable, so beginners can take part. The sunset cruise is ¥6,600 — the option for a day when watching the water is not enough.

逗子マリーナ

Opened in 1971, it was a pioneer of Japan's marine resorts. Its palm-lined avenue and white resort apartment blocks earned it the nickname "Japan's Miami" and made it a symbol of the bubble-era Shonan lifestyle. Until the early 2000s, summer outdoor concerts were one of its seasonal fixtures.

くるくる

A recycle shop in Kotsubo, Zushi, dealing in secondhand tools and goods both brought in by customers and sourced domestically. Accessories, furniture and appliances crowd the premises. It is in the same Kotsubo area as the marina, which makes it a natural detour after the sea.

飯島トンネル

A tunnel on National Route 134 along Sagami Bay, the road linking Yokosuka and Oiso, cutting through from Zushi toward Kamakura's Zaimokuza Beach. It runs about 250 m through a small headland-like hill following the coastline. Its address is in Zaimokuza, Kamakura, so it marks the way onward from Zushi to the Kamakura side.

One closing tip: time your arrival at the water for before sunset. Even without booking OCEANS' ¥6,600 sunset cruise, the stretch from 浪子不動園地 through 逗子海岸 to 逗子マリーナ reads differently in the evening light.
