Kamakura Station Walking Guide — From the Renbai Market and Komachi to Zaimokuza Beach

Around Kamakura Station there are 17 walking spots, ranging from a farmers' market and bakeries to a shrine and a beach. The Kamakura Farmers' Market (known as "Renbai," started in 1928) and the cafés and sweet shops of Komachi sit within walking distance of each other, and from there you can continue to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, founded in 1180, and on to Zaimokuza Beach. Small amounts — coffee from ¥900, takoyaki at ¥700 — are enough to string a whole day together here.

Suggested order: Asagohan → Renbai (PARADISE ALLEY / DAILY / Hoeido / LANE BY) → the cafés and sweets of Komachi → Tsurugaoka Hachimangu → the Children's Nature Forest → Zaimokuza Beach → Onarimachi → Komachi at night.

A set-meal shop at Komachi 2-10-10 that opens in the morning. It serves Kamakura-style breakfasts such as a whitebait-and-scallion omelette, and closes as soon as ingredients run out, so go early.

Nicknamed "Renbai," it began in 1928. Farmers from around Kamakura take turns bringing vegetables to sell; which vendors appear on which day is listed on the official site's calendar.

The heart of Kamakura, founded in 1180 by Minamoto no Yoritomo. Wakamiya-oji, running straight from Route 134, is both the approach to the shrine and the city's main street. Climb the great staircase and look out at the sea, and you understand why the shogunate was established here.

A green space in Jomyoji, ideal for a summer forest bath. It includes a viewpoint chosen as one of Kanto's hundred Fuji views, and the tree-lined streets of the quiet residential area "Highland" to the east are pleasant to walk too.

The beach that flourished as the Kamakura shogunate's gateway to the sea. Wakae-jima at its eastern end, built in 1232, is considered the oldest surviving port ruin in Japan. With no developed fishing harbour, fishermen load boats onto carts and push them across the sand to the water, and "Monzamaru" sells that morning's whitebait from a stand here.

One tip: the four shops inside Renbai (PARADISE ALLEY, DAILY, Hoeido, LANE BY) and the two at Komachi 2-9-22 (Pelican Shokudo, MUSIC BAR +) each share a single address, so building the day around those two anchors keeps the walking short. Some shops announce their opening days in advance, so decide the order starting from the one you most want to visit.
