Zushi-Hayama Walking Guide — 18 Spots Along the Sagami Bay Road

The area around Zushi-Hayama Station has 18 walking spots, from beaches and a seaside shrine to a modern art museum, a self-roasting coffee shop and summer-only beach houses. They line the Sagami Bay coast in almost a single road from Horiuchi in the north through Isshiki to Akiya in the south, with Mount Fuji visible across the water from many of them. Food ranges from a ¥120 croquette to a ¥2,980 seafood bowl and a ¥6,000 paella, so the day can be built to any budget.

Suggested order

Fuel up at Hayama Asahiya Beef Shop in Horiuchi, walk to Morito Shrine and Morito Beach for the Yujiro Lighthouse view, stop at Pool 'n' Tap, then work through Isshiki — Ken Sushi, Suzukiya, THE FIVE☆BEANS, SUNSHINE + CLOUD, the museum and Isshiki Beach — followed by Yushige or LUKE., then head south for sunset at Chojagasaki and finish at Kuruwa Beach and Plage Sud. In summer, add OASIS and BLUE MOON.

Hayama Asahiya Beef Shop

Morito Shrine

Morito Beach

The signature beach of Hayama, which grew from the Meiji era as a villa district for politicians, business figures and writers. The 1956 film Crazed Fruit, starring Yujiro Ishihara, was shot nearby and spread the image of Hayama as "the young people's sea." Yujiro Lighthouse

A lighthouse on the offshore reef of Morito Beach, officially named Hayama Lighthouse. It was donated by Shintaro Ishihara on the third memorial of his brother Yujiro. Isshiki Beach

The beach in front of the Hayama Imperial Villa, known for its clear water. Rocky shore spreads out at Koiso-no-hana and Shibasaki Beach behind the villa, where small creatures live right beside the swimmers. Emperor Showa and the Emperor Emeritus walked this shore researching marine life, collecting sea slugs, sea anemones and gobies.
