Katase-Enoshima Walking Guide — 8 Spots from Vintage Shops to the Island

Around Katase-Enoshima Station there are 8 walking spots, ranging from a vintage clothing store and a bookshop to an aquarium, a church, two beaches, and Enoshima island itself. Most of the addresses line up along Katase-Kaigan in Fujisawa City, and the only clearly fixed price among them is the ¥2,800 admission to Enoshima Aquarium. Everything else is simply sand and side streets, enough to fill half a day or a whole one.

Suggested order: From the station, visit the three shops in Katase-Kaigan 1-chome (Ace General Store → Bong Sadhu Room → Enoshima Diner OPPA-LA), then walk out onto Katase-Higashihama Beach. Continue to Katase Catholic Church and Enoshima Aquarium, cross over to Nishihama & Kugenuma, and finish on the island. Since the aquarium's last entry is 16:00, build your timing around it.

A vintage clothing store carrying everything from NY vintage to TYPE X. It took over the building of an inn once run by the owner's grandfather, and is now a complex housing 5 shops. The address is Katase-Kaigan 1-13-8, Fujisawa. As the first stop before you reach the sea, it's worth looking at the building itself, not just the clothes.

A bookshop inside the same building as Ace General Store (Katase-Kaigan 1-13-9). Like the sadhu ascetics of India, it deals in things that still carry the marks of human hands. Since it's just another room in the same structure, you can drop in right after browsing the clothes.

A live space and diner on the 4th floor of the Enoshima View Tower, looking out at Enoshima. It opened at 7:00 on July 7, 2001 — a very Shonan way to begin. From up here you can fix the geography of the island and the sea in your head before heading down to the sand.

The beach on the east side of Enoshima. Together with Nishihama and Kugenuma it forms roughly 1.6 km of sand, which in the 1960s served as the setting for the Wakadaishō film series starring Yuzo Kayama, and later grew into a mecca for surfing and beach volleyball. Higashihama is the swimming beach where families gather — better for an unhurried walk than for chasing waves.

A wooden church dedicated in 1939 (Katase-Kaigan 2-2-35). Because some residents at the time were uneasy about foreign culture, it was built in a Japanese temple-like style. Inside the sanctuary are religious paintings by Luca Hasegawa. If you want a guided visit, you need to inquire in advance.

An aquarium with Enoshima and the sea right at hand, known as the birthplace of the dolphin show. There is also a touch pool where you can touch bullhead sharks. Admission is ¥2,800 with last entry at 16:00, and opening hours vary by season and holiday periods. It's the one spot on this walk with a real ticket price, so it works well as the anchor of your schedule.

The beach on the west side of Enoshima. Surf shops line the front and plenty of surfers chase the waves here, with the island's yacht harbor directly ahead. The image of "Shonan" that Japanese people picture was born around here — and this is where you can stand and confirm it.

The island at the center of the Shonan landscape, which drifted up from southern seas some 20 million years ago. Its visitors have changed with each era: a pilgrimage site for Benzaiten in the Edo period, honeymoons in the Showa era, a date spot in Heisei, and inbound tourism in Reiwa. With its yacht harbor, Sea Candle, and the Iwaya caves, it's a fitting finish to the walk.
