This is the site of a school established in the early Meiji period by the government's Ministry of Public Works (Kobusho) to train engineers. It began in 1871 as the Kogakuryo and was renamed the Imperial College of Engineering (Kobu Daigakko) in 1877. Its graduates, who studied under teachers invited from Britain, included Tatsuno Kingo, and the school was later carried on by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Tokyo. It stands near Toranomon Station, in what is now a corner of the government office district.
