Hanzomon Walking Guide — Palace Moats and Quiet Museums

Around Hanzomon Station there are four walking spots, ranging from a park along the Imperial Palace moat to a shrine and two museums. The JCII Camera Museum, the Hanzomon Museum, Hirakawa Tenmangu Shrine and Chidorigafuchi Park all list Hanzomon Station as their nearest station, so one walk can combine quiet time indoors with time spent beside water and stone steps. Because both museums are places to view exhibits slowly, putting a stretch of walking between them keeps the day from feeling heavy.

Hanzomon Museum

The [Hanzomon Museum](/en/spot/5d4b6289-d93b-4bde-afe0-a9460b57468d), near Hanzomon Station, exhibits Buddhist art. It opened in 2018 and its collection includes a seated Dainichi Nyorai statue thought to be the work of Unkei. The galleries are dimly lit and quiet, which works either as a first stop before you set out or as a pause after walking the palace moat.

JCII Camera Museum

The [JCII Camera Museum](/en/spot/69aaf77f-9b47-4145-8218-2af0c7a8abd7) sits a short distance from Hanzomon Station and specializes in cameras. Established in 1989 by the Japan Camera Industry Institute, it displays historic cameras from Japan and abroad along with materials tracing the path of the Japanese camera industry. The exhibits are small machines you lean in close to examine, which suits a moment of quiet in the middle of a walk. It also makes a fitting first stop on a day you're carrying a camera yourself.

Hirakawa Tenmangu Shrine

[Hirakawa Tenmangu Shrine](/en/spot/cf7372c4-04e1-4bc0-ab7a-803d111dc41f) enshrines Sugawara no Michizane and began in 1478 (Bunmei 10), when Ota Dokan founded it inside Edo Castle. It was later moved to its present site in Kojimachi. The bronze torii at the front is designated a cultural property of Chiyoda City, and the view of stone steps and a torii continuing between office buildings is particular to this neighborhood. Walk up those steps straight from the museums — the air changes abruptly here.

Chidorigafuchi Park

[Chidorigafuchi Park](/en/spot/e9e26825-1f44-43dd-b870-194722c26633) is a long, narrow park running along Chidorigafuchi, one of the Imperial Palace moats. The moat was originally dug to defend Edo Castle; today a row of cherry trees leans over the water beside a walking path. Heading from Hanzomon Station toward Kudan, you get the moat on one side and trees on the other. Sit on a bench and watch the waterbirds and the greenery on the far bank — a good way to close the walk.

One last tip. Three of the four spots are indoors or within shrine grounds and one is a long walking path, so if the weather looks uncertain, move the two museums to the end and the route still holds together. Chidorigafuchi Park follows a line of cherry trees, so allow extra time to sit down.
