A museum founded in 1877 (Meiji 10), standing just beyond the park from Ueno Station. Divided into the Japan Gallery and the Global Gallery, it traces the formation of the Japanese archipelago, the evolution of living things, and the progress of science and technology. The Japan Gallery, built in the early Showa period, is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and a life-size model of a blue whale stands outdoors.
